Category 5 Apparel was born from a wicked storm, a passion for drawing, a story shared online, and the desire to inspire.
I read a story online, planting the seed that grew into Category 5. Shared by a person who decided to rethink their plan to end their life after seeing a bumper sticker that read “Please don’t take your life today. The world is so much better with you in it. More than you realize, stay.”
The power held by this story shows us that one is always enough. One person can change your day. One day can change your life. One conversation is enough to help someone who is struggling. One smile. One hoodie. One bumper sticker.
I wanted to be part of this movement, I wanted to fill the world with reasons why someone should stay, why life was worth fighting for. I wanted to place messages walking down the street on t-shirts and hoodies and stickers. Because one is enough. I started designing, planning, and creating, not realizing at the time that this passion project would ultimately save my own life.
The name came naturally, Category 5 Apparel. After facing the storm which almost took my life, I told people I went through a Category 5 shit-storm but emerged a Category 5 Badass (with a capital B). The name stuck. And the mission was reinforced.
Not only did I want this brand to empower those who wear it and those who see it, I wanted to connect every person who enters the world of Category 5 to feel the ripples of positive impact.
